Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born painter who settled in Australia, produced this work during his period of extensive travel across the colonies. The painting depicts the dramatic topography of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, specifically the area known as Weatherboard Fall. Von Guerard applied his rigorous training from the Düsseldorf School of Painting to capture the geological formations with precision. He utilised a meticulous technique to render the stratified sandstone cliffs and the dense, scrubby vegetation characteristic of the region.

The composition employs a classic panoramic view, common in nineteenth-century topographical art. A solitary figure stands on a rocky outcrop in the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the vast, deep valley.
