Description
A commercial signboard by Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani, depicting a traditional wine cellar scene with a rider and ox-drawn cart.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work as a commercial signboard for a local wine merchant. The painting features a narrative scene set against a dark, atmospheric background. On the left, a small house sits near a cart pulled by an ox, while a rider on a white horse occupies the right side. The rider holds a traditional drinking horn, a common motif in Georgian culture. The upper portion of the composition contains bold Cyrillic text, which identifies the establishment as a wine cellar and indicates that wine is available for consumption on the premises or for takeaway.
Pirosmani worked primarily on oilcloth, a material chosen for its durability and low cost. His technique involves flat application of colour and simplified forms, which align with the aesthetic of folk art. The figures are rendered with a directness that avoids academic perspective, focusing instead on the clarity of the subject matter. The contrast between the dark, moody ground and the lighter figures creates a distinct visual rhythm. This piece reflects the social environment of early twentieth-century Tbilisi, where such signboards were common features of the urban streetscape. Pirosmani's work remained largely unrecognised during his lifetime, yet his approach to composition and his use of local materials have since gained attention for their authenticity and stylistic independence. The painting functions both as a functional advertisement and as a record of regional customs, capturing a specific moment in the cultural history of the Caucasus.
