Description
A detailed etching by Félix Hilaire Buhot depicting a snowy Parisian street scene in 1879, complete with narrative vignettes.
Félix Hilaire Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his experimental approach to printmaking. In this work, he captures the atmosphere of the French capital during the severe winter of 1879. The composition is characteristic of his style, featuring a central scene surrounded by smaller vignettes, or 'remarques', that provide additional narrative detail. These peripheral sketches show the harsh reality of the season, including fallen horses and street scenes, which contrast with the main view of the Place Breda.
Buhot utilised a combination of etching, aquatint, and drypoint to achieve a wide range of textures. The snow is rendered with delicate marks, while the figures and carriages are defined by more robust lines. The inclusion of advertising pillars and urban details anchors the work in a specific time and place. His ability to convey the cold, damp air of a Parisian winter through monochromatic ink is a technical achievement. The print reflects the artist's interest in the everyday life of the city, moving away from formal portraiture to focus on the movement and activity of the streets. This piece is a fine example of the late nineteenth-century interest in capturing the transient nature of urban existence.
