Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and the rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This work, titled Woordbreuk, demonstrates his characteristic approach to figuration, where human forms are reduced to skeletal, almost childlike outlines. The composition features two primary figures rendered in stark black ink against a textured, monochromatic background. The left figure possesses an elongated, oval head, while the right figure is contained within a geometric, diamond-shaped frame. A circular, moon-like form hangs in the upper left, adding a sense of cosmic isolation to the scene.
