This etching by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert presents a stark allegorical study of human introspection. The central figure, a muscular male nude, stands in a contrapposto pose, holding a mirror that reflects a grim, aged face. In his other hand, he clutches a bundle of rods, a traditional symbol of discipline or punishment. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Sui notitia horrores conscia incutit', translates to the idea that self-knowledge strikes horror into the conscious mind, reflecting the moralising tone common in sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking.

Coornhert, a polymath who worked as an engraver, writer, and philosopher, often utilised his prints to communicate ethical and theological concepts. The figure is rendered with precise, controlled lines that define the musculature and the texture of the mirror frame. The background remains minimal, ensuring the focus stays on the psychological weight of the subject. The mirror, an object of vanity in many contemporary works, is here transformed into a tool for uncomfortable truth. The contrast between the powerful, youthful body and the aged, weary face in the reflection creates a visual tension that speaks to the transience of life and the burden of moral awareness.

This print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the period, with cross-hatching used to create depth and shadow across the figure. As a master of the burin, Coornhert influenced many younger artists, including Hendrick Goltzius, who worked in his workshop.
