Description

An academic red chalk study of a seated male nude by Hendrik Voogd, created in 1783 as a prize-winning exercise in anatomical precision.

This academic study in red chalk, executed by Hendrik Voogd in 1783, captures a seated male nude viewed from the rear. The work bears the inscription 'Tertium Praemium', indicating it was awarded the third prize during the artist's training. Such drawings were standard exercises within the Dutch art academies of the late eighteenth century, designed to demonstrate a student's command of human anatomy, proportion, and the application of light and shadow.

Voogd employs red chalk to model the musculature of the back and limbs with precision. The figure is posed upon a block, a common studio prop used to elevate the model and provide a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the human body. The raised arm adds a sense of tension to the composition, allowing the artist to explore the shift in the shoulder blades and the tension in the latissimus dorsi. The shading is achieved through careful hatching, which defines the volume of the torso and legs while maintaining the clarity of the contours.

As a young artist, Voogd demonstrated a clear aptitude for the Neoclassical style, which prioritised clarity, order, and the study of classical antiquity. This drawing reflects the rigorous discipline required of students, who were expected to master the depiction of the human form before progressing to more complex historical or mythological subjects. The inscription at the top left, including the date in Roman numerals, confirms the context of this piece as a formal competition entry. It remains a clear example of the technical training that shaped the careers of many Dutch painters of the period. The print captures the texture of the original chalk, preserving the subtle gradations of tone and the deliberate, rhythmic lines characteristic of the medium.
