Zotheid (Folly) - Pieter van den Berge

Pieter van den Berge, a Dutch engraver and draughtsman active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced this study of a figure representing Zotheid, or Folly. The work captures a character dressed in the traditional attire of a jester, complete with a cap featuring characteristic points. The figure stands with hands on hips, projecting a sense of confidence or perhaps mockery, which aligns with the allegorical nature of the subject.

The artist employs a fluid approach to line, using ink to define the contours of the figure before applying washes of colour.
