Napoleon Bonaparte is positioned in the distance, observing the movement of his troops as they pass before him. Meissonier was known for his obsession with historical accuracy. He reportedly purchased a uniform of a cuirassier and even had a patch of wheat sown in his garden to study the way horses moved through tall grass.
