Ernest Meissonier, a painter celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy, produced this work in 1864. It depicts Napoleon Bonaparte during the final, desperate stages of the French Campaign of 1814. The composition captures the Emperor riding a white horse, leading his weary staff through a desolate, snow-covered landscape following the retreat from Soissons after the Battle of Laon.

Meissonier was known for his rigorous preparation, often constructing scale models and sourcing authentic period uniforms to ensure the veracity of his scenes. The painting avoids the glorification of war, focusing instead on the sombre reality of defeat. Napoleon is shown in a grey overcoat, his expression heavy with the weight of his crumbling empire. The surrounding officers appear equally exhausted, their postures reflecting the fatigue of a long, unsuccessful campaign.

The palette is dominated by muted greys, browns, and whites, which effectively convey the harsh, freezing conditions of the French winter.
