Description
A 1961 abstract composition by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, featuring his characteristic concentric spirals and organic, rhythmic line work.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born Friedrich Stowasser, was an Austrian artist known for his rejection of straight lines and his preference for organic, spiral forms. In 460 Hommage au Tachisme, created in 1961, the artist engages with the European movement of Tachisme, which prioritised spontaneous, gestural brushwork. Despite this connection, the work retains Hundertwasser's signature preoccupation with concentric structures and rhythmic, repeating lines.
The composition is dominated by a series of nested, rectangular spirals that radiate from a central core. These lines, rendered in bold red, act as conduits or pathways that guide the eye across the surface. The background is divided into distinct zones: a deep, atmospheric blue at the top and a warm, earthy yellow at the base. Within these areas, the artist employs a variety of textures and small, irregular shapes that disrupt the uniformity of the colour fields. A prominent gold-leaf block sits at the bottom, providing a metallic contrast to the surrounding oil paint.
Hundertwasser often used his art to express his philosophy regarding the harmony between human creation and the natural world. Here, the rigid, geometric nature of the spirals is softened by the hand-drawn quality of the lines. The work avoids the cold precision of industrial design, opting instead for a tactile, human-centric aesthetic. The interplay between the dark, moody upper section and the bright, grounded lower section suggests a transition between different states of being or environments. This piece is a clear example of the artist's ability to synthesise abstract expressionist impulses with a highly personal, decorative visual language. It remains a representative work from his most productive period, reflecting his ongoing interest in the psychological power of colour and the meditative quality of repetitive, flowing forms.
