This engraving, A Chief Lord of Roanoac, originates from the 1590 publication of Thomas Hariot's A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. Theodor de Bry, a Flemish engraver and publisher, produced this work based on the original watercolour sketches of John White, who accompanied the 1585 expedition to the Roanoke colony. The print depicts a Secotan leader in two distinct poses, offering a comprehensive view of his attire, physical stature, and personal adornments.

The composition presents the figure from both the front and the back, a technique common in early modern ethnographic studies to provide maximum information to the European viewer. The subject wears a fringed apron and a rectangular gorget, with his hair styled in a specific manner indicative of his status. The background features a simplified coastal environment, including a body of water with small boats, which provides context for the subject's environment without distracting from the primary figure. De Bry utilised precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the subject and the textures of the clothing.
