This mezzotint by Richard Earlom reproduces a painting by the Dutch master Frans Snyders. Earlom was a highly skilled engraver, and his work here demonstrates the technical precision required to translate the tonal qualities of oil paint into the medium of print. The composition depicts a busy market scene, crowded with a variety of marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and a seal. Two figures manage the stall, their actions captured in a moment of daily labour. Earlom utilised the mezzotint process to achieve a wide range of light and shadow.
