Description
A dramatic etching from Max Klinger's Symbolist series, A Glove, depicting a man attempting to retrieve a lost glove from turbulent waters.
The Rescue is the fourth plate from Max Klinger's celebrated cycle, A Glove (Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove). This series of ten etchings follows the obsessive journey of a man who discovers a woman's dropped glove at a skating rink. The narrative shifts between reality and dreamlike sequences, reflecting the psychological interests of the late nineteenth century.
In this specific plate, the protagonist is depicted in a small sailing boat, navigating turbulent, dark waters. He reaches out with a pole to retrieve the lost glove, which floats in the foreground like a severed hand. The contrast between the stark white sail of the boat and the churning, shadowed sea creates a sense of isolation and urgency. Klinger employs precise, dense hatching to build the texture of the waves and the stormy sky, demonstrating his technical mastery of the etching medium.
The imagery is characteristic of Klinger's approach to the uncanny. By elevating a mundane object to the status of a fetish, he explores themes of desire and irrationality. The composition is tightly focused, drawing the eye directly to the interaction between the man and the object of his fixation. The dramatic lighting and the exaggerated scale of the glove contribute to the surreal atmosphere that defines the entire series. This work remains a significant example of German Symbolist printmaking, illustrating the artist's ability to weave complex, non-linear narratives through visual art. The print captures a moment of intense focus, where the external environment mirrors the internal state of the subject.
