Description
A botanical study of Primula auricula from Robert John Thornton's 'The Temple of Flora', featuring four colour variations set against a mountainous backdrop.
This print originates from 'The Temple of Flora', a monumental botanical publication produced by the physician and botanist Robert John Thornton between 1799 and 1807. The work represents a departure from the standard scientific documentation of the era, as it places botanical specimens within dramatic, atmospheric settings rather than isolating them against plain backgrounds.
'A Group of Auriculas' features four distinct colour variations of the Primula auricula. The flowers are rendered with precision, capturing the characteristic white 'paste' or farina at the centre of each bloom. The artist, Peter Henderson, provided the original painting for this plate, which was subsequently translated into print by the engraver James Hopwood. The composition juxtaposes the cultivated, delicate nature of the auriculas with the rugged, mountainous backdrop, a stylistic choice that aligns with the Romantic interest in the sublime power of nature.
The printing process involved a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving, techniques that allowed for subtle tonal gradations and a soft, painterly quality. This approach was expensive and technically demanding, contributing to the ambitious nature of Thornton's project. The print serves as a record of the horticultural enthusiasm for auriculas in early 19th-century Britain, where these plants were highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts. The inclusion of the mountain range provides a sense of scale and environmental context, moving beyond the purely descriptive aims of earlier herbals. This piece remains a significant example of the intersection between scientific observation and artistic expression during the Georgian period.
