Richard Earlom was a master of the mezzotint process, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of tone and light. This print, published in 1772, reproduces a painting by the Flemish artist Frans Snyders. It depicts a bustling market scene, where the focus rests upon the abundance of produce rather than the human figures.

The composition is dominated by large baskets overflowing with cabbages, root vegetables, and leafy greens. A horse stands to the left, its head lowered towards the produce, while two women engage in a transaction at the centre. A small child sits near a basket, adding a sense of domestic activity to the scene. The use of mezzotint provides a velvety texture to the shadows, allowing the light to catch the rounded forms of the vegetables and the woven texture of the baskets.

This work was part of the ambitious project by John Boydell to reproduce the collection of paintings at Houghton Hall. Earlom was chosen for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of the original Dutch and Flemish masters into the medium of print. The result is a work that captures the tactile quality of the market goods with precision. The scene reflects the interest in genre subjects during the eighteenth century, where everyday life and the bounty of nature were common themes for both painters and printmakers. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to achieve such depth and tonal range without the use of colour, relying entirely on the manipulation of light and shadow across the plate.
