Gerrit Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt, became a master of the fijnschilder (fine painter) style. This approach prioritised smooth surfaces, meticulous detail, and precise control of light. In this work, the hermit is depicted in a moment of quiet devotion. His hands are clasped over an open book, and his gaze is directed downward, suggesting a state of deep contemplation. The composition is structured around the interplay of shadow and light, a technique Dou refined throughout his career.

The setting is sparse, typical of the hermit theme popular in seventeenth-century Dutch art. A skull rests on a table in the background, acting as a memento mori, a reminder of the transience of life. Beside it, a candle provides a soft, directional light that illuminates the hermit's weathered features and the texture of his robes.
