This print is a masterful reproduction by Richard Earlom, based on an original drawing by the French master Claude Lorrain. Published in 1776 by John Boydell, the work reflects the eighteenth-century British fascination with the classical pastoral tradition. Earlom, a highly skilled engraver, utilised a combination of etching and mezzotint to capture the atmospheric qualities of the original composition.

The scene depicts a biblical narrative set within an idealised Mediterranean environment. To the right, an angel gestures towards the distance, offering solace to Hagar, who sits in the foreground. The composition is balanced by the heavy, dark foliage of the trees on the left and the architectural ruins on the right, which frame the open vista. In the middle ground, a herd of cattle moves along a path, adding a sense of daily life to the mythic setting. The distant mountains and soft, rolling hills draw the eye towards the horizon, creating a sense of depth and tranquillity.

Earlom was celebrated for his ability to translate the tonal nuances of drawings and paintings into the medium of print.
