Henry Ossawa Tanner, an American expatriate who spent much of his career in France, travelled to the Middle East in the early twentieth century. This work captures the architectural character of Cairo, focusing on the alternating bands of stone masonry typical of Mamluk-era structures. Tanner employs a palette of warm ochres, terracotta, and muted shadows to convey the specific quality of North African light.
