This triptych by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a playful scene set within the pleasure quarters of Edo. The composition draws upon the popular narrative of the Chūshingura, specifically the character Yuranosuke, who famously feigned a dissolute life in the pleasure districts to deceive his enemies. Eishi subverts this dramatic tale by replacing the central male figure with a woman, transforming the historical narrative into a lighthearted parody.

The print features a group of women engaged in leisure activities, surrounded by hanging lanterns and wisteria. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful posture characteristic of Eishi’s work, which moved away from the more robust figures favoured by earlier artists. The use of line is precise and fluid, defining the folds of the kimonos and the delicate expressions of the subjects. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that allow the composition to breathe across the three sheets.

Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre. His work often focuses on the elegance of the courtesans and the atmosphere of the Yoshiwara district. This specific print demonstrates his ability to integrate literary references with the contemporary fashion and social life of the period. The arrangement of the figures across the triptych creates a sense of movement and interaction, as the eye travels from the woman holding the screen on the left to the musician on the right. The inclusion of the shamisen and the various domestic items provides a glimpse into the daily life and pastimes of the women in these quarters, presented with a sense of gentle irony.
