Description

A detailed etching from Goya's 'La Tauromaquia' series, depicting a mounted knight facing a bull in the arena.

This etching belongs to the series 'La Tauromaquia', a collection of thirty-three prints produced by Francisco Goya between 1815 and 1816. The series documents the history and practice of bullfighting in Spain, moving from historical origins to the contemporary techniques of the nineteenth century. In this specific plate, Goya captures a mounted knight, or 'caballero', engaged in the act of breaking short spears, known as 'rejoncillos', while facing a bull.

The composition is defined by the stark contrast between the open, sun-drenched arena floor and the dark, muscular form of the bull. Goya employs aquatint to create the soft, atmospheric shadows that stretch across the sand, providing a sense of depth and movement. The knight, dressed in traditional attire, maintains a steady posture on horseback, his focus directed toward the animal. The background features a simple wooden barrier, behind which a small group of spectators is visible, their presence rendered with minimal, suggestive lines.

Goya's technical approach in this series demonstrates his mastery of printmaking. He uses etching to define the sharp outlines of the figures and the horse's anatomy, while aquatint adds tonal variation and texture to the scene. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the tension inherent in the encounter. By stripping away extraneous elements, Goya directs the viewer's attention to the physical interaction between man and beast. This print is a clear example of his ability to document cultural practices through a lens of dramatic realism, capturing the danger and precision required in the bullring. The work remains a significant record of Spanish equestrian traditions as they existed during the early nineteenth century.
