Description
A classic Japanese woodblock triptych by Gosōtei Hirosada, capturing a dramatic moment from a kabuki performance set at Iga Pass.
This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicts a scene from the kabuki theatre, specifically a moment from the narrative of the Iga Pass. Hirosada, an artist active in the Kamigata region (Osaka and Kyoto), is known for his focus on the theatrical world. Unlike the more stylised works from Edo, Kamigata prints often possess a distinct realism in their portrayal of actors and stage settings.
The composition is divided into three distinct sections, typical of a triptych format. On the left, a figure holds a large paper lantern, casting light upon the central character who is huddled against a wooden screen. The figure on the right observes the scene with a stern expression. The use of colour is restrained, relying on muted blues, browns, and ochre tones to establish the nocturnal atmosphere. The architectural elements, such as the slatted wooden screen and the stone wall, provide a sense of place, grounding the dramatic tension of the performance.
Hirosada captures the specific facial expressions and postures of the actors, which were intended to be recognisable to contemporary audiences familiar with the kabuki repertoire. The print serves as a visual record of a specific production, documenting the costumes and staging techniques of the mid-nineteenth century. The fine lines of the woodblock carving define the folds of the garments and the textures of the wooden structures, demonstrating the technical skill involved in the production of these prints. This work offers a glimpse into the popular culture of the period, where theatre and printmaking were closely linked, allowing fans to collect images of their favourite performers in iconic roles.
