This woodblock print originates from the series A Tōkaidō Board Game of Courtesans, Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara (Keisei dōchū sugoroku, Mitate Yoshiwara gojūsan tsui). Keisai Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, produced this work as a mitate-e, a genre of parody or comparative print that links the famous Tōkaidō road stations with the inhabitants of the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
The composition features two distinct panels, each depicting a high-ranking courtesan. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elegance of the period, showcasing elaborate hairstyles adorned with numerous hairpins and layered kimonos featuring complex textile patterns. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour, with the figures occupying the foreground while smaller, inset cartouches provide a visual reference to the specific Tōkaidō stations being parodied. These small vignettes offer a contrast to the primary subjects, grounding the fantastical world of the Yoshiwara in the geography of the famous travel route.
