Description
A detailed Dutch Golden Age still life featuring a lush bouquet of flowers, grapes, and a peach, painted by Margareta Haverman in 1716.
Margareta Haverman was a rare female practitioner within the Dutch Golden Age tradition of still-life painting. This work, dated 1716, demonstrates the technical precision required of the genre. The composition follows the established conventions of the period, featuring a dense arrangement of flora set against a dark, recessed background. This choice of backdrop allows the colours of the petals and fruit to emerge with clarity.
The arrangement includes a variety of species, such as roses, tulips, and marigolds, alongside clusters of grapes and a peach resting on a stone ledge. Haverman employs a controlled application of paint to capture the textures of the organic subjects, from the translucent skin of the grapes to the delicate, layered structure of the rose blooms. Small details, such as the inclusion of a snail on a leaf and a butterfly resting on a stem, are characteristic of the period, adding a sense of observation to the staged scene.
As a student of Jan van Huysum, Haverman adopted the lighter, more decorative approach that defined the later stages of Dutch still-life painting. Her work is notable for its balance and the careful management of light, which directs the viewer across the bouquet. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It remains a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship expected of professional painters in the early eighteenth century, reflecting the period's fascination with botanical accuracy and the symbolic nature of the vanitas tradition.
