António Carneiro, a central figure in Portuguese Symbolism, completed this triptych between 1899 and 1901. The work explores the cyclical nature of human existence through three distinct panels. The left panel depicts a youthful figure in a verdant setting, suggesting the innocence and potential of early life. The central panel introduces a more dramatic narrative, featuring figures on horseback emerging from a dense forest, representing the active, often turbulent journey of adulthood. The right panel shifts to a contemplative, melancholic tone, showing a woman in mourning attire beside a child near a monumental sphinx, with a skull placed in the foreground. This final section addresses the inevitability of death and the mystery of the afterlife.

Carneiro developed his aesthetic during his time in Paris, where he absorbed the influence of the Nabis and the broader Symbolist movement. His approach here avoids literal representation in favour of mood and allegory. The colour palette shifts from the bright, hopeful greens of the first panel to the sombre, deep blues and earthy tones of the final section. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the stages of life, using the verticality of the trees and the static presence of the sphinx to create a sense of timelessness. The work reflects the artist's interest in the philosophical questions of his era, moving away from the realism that dominated much of the nineteenth-century academic tradition. By employing these allegorical figures, Carneiro invites the viewer to consider the passage of time and the human condition without relying on conventional religious iconography. The triptych remains a significant example of how Portuguese artists engaged with European Symbolist currents at the turn of the century.
