A nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock triptych depicting elephants in India, created during the era of increased international trade.

This triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the late Edo period as Japan opened its ports to international trade. They functioned as visual reportage, satisfying a public curiosity regarding foreign lands, customs, and exotic animals.

The composition depicts a scene in India, featuring large elephants adorned with elaborate howdahs and trappings. The figures surrounding the animals wear European-style clothing, reflecting the artist's interpretation of foreign dress based on limited direct observation and imported illustrations. The architectural elements in the background suggest a blend of Western-style structures and the artist's own stylistic conventions.

Yoshitora employs a clear, graphic line quality characteristic of the Utagawa school.
