A Worker's Day, painted by Giacomo Balla in 1904, is a triptych-like composition that captures the passage of time through the lens of urban labour. Before his full immersion into the Futurist movement, Balla utilised the Divisionist technique, applying small, distinct strokes of colour to create a luminous, vibrating surface. This work is divided into three distinct panels, each representing a different stage of the day, from the bright, sun-drenched morning to the dim, gas-lit evening.

The subject matter focuses on the construction of a building, a common sight in the rapidly expanding Rome of the early twentieth century. Balla observes the workers with a detached, analytical eye, placing them within the skeletal framework of scaffolding. The left panel shows the structure under the harsh, direct light of midday, where the texture of the bricks and the wooden beams are rendered with meticulous care. The right panel shifts to the evening, where the scene is bathed in the warm, artificial glow of a street lamp, casting long shadows and softening the architectural lines.

By juxtaposing these different temporal states, Balla examines the relationship between human activity and the environment. The painting avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a rigorous observation of light and form. The Divisionist method allows the artist to manipulate the viewer's perception of light, as the eye blends the individual dots of pigment at a distance. This approach creates a sense of atmospheric depth and movement, even within the static nature of a construction site. The work remains a significant example of Italian Divisionism, demonstrating the transition from traditional representational painting to the more experimental, dynamic styles that would define Balla's later career.
