Description

A historical photograph by Kassian Céphas documenting the ceremonial bearers of the Sultan's regalia at the Kraton in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Kassian Céphas, the first professional photographer of Javanese descent, captured this image within the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, the royal palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. The photograph depicts a formal procession of eight women, known as the abdi dalem, who served as bearers of the Sultan's regalia and jewellery. Their posture is uniform, reflecting the strict court etiquette and hierarchical structure of the Javanese nobility during the late nineteenth century.

The composition is balanced and symmetrical, with the figures arranged in a horizontal line against the architectural backdrop of the palace pavilion. The open-air structure, with its wooden pillars and tiled floor, provides a clear, uncluttered setting that directs the viewer's attention to the ceremonial objects held by the women. Céphas utilised a steady, documentary approach, documenting the traditional attire, including the batik sarongs and the specific way the hair is styled, which were markers of status and role within the palace.

This work offers a rare glimpse into the internal life of the Javanese court, a subject often documented by European photographers of the era. Céphas, however, possessed a unique position as a court photographer, allowing him access to private ceremonies and rituals. His technical proficiency with the camera enabled him to record these cultural practices with clarity and precision. The image functions as a record of Javanese court life, preserving the visual details of ceremonial dress and the physical environment of the Kraton. The print captures the stillness of the moment, providing a window into the formalised traditions that defined the Sultan's household. The monochromatic palette emphasises the textures of the textiles and the architectural lines of the pavilion, maintaining a focus on the cultural significance of the subjects.
