Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, became known for his expressive depictions of kabuki actors. In this composition, the artist captures a moment of domestic tension and preparation within a traditional Japanese interior. The figures are rendered with the characteristic bold lines and flat colour planes associated with the Ukiyo-e school of the late eighteenth century.

The scene features a group of figures engaged in quiet activity. A seated older man, dressed in a red patterned kimono, occupies the foreground, while a standing figure in a striped garment looks on. To the left, a woman stands near an open doorway, her form partially obscured by a dark head covering. The architectural elements, such as the sliding screens and the view of a bridge through the opening, provide a sense of spatial depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, deep reds, and soft greens to define the clothing and the surrounding environment.

Shun'ei's approach to the human form often involved slightly exaggerated facial features, which helped convey the dramatic intensity of the kabuki stage. This print demonstrates his ability to balance narrative clarity with decorative composition. The attention to the patterns on the garments and the placement of everyday objects, such as the brazier and small boxes, adds a layer of realism to the theatrical subject.
