This work is part of a series by Sakai Hōitsu, a prominent figure of the Edo period Rinpa school. The composition captures a specific seasonal activity, reflecting the traditional Japanese focus on the passage of time and the rituals associated with the lunar calendar. Hōitsu, who was a member of the Himeji domain aristocracy, became a Buddhist monk later in life, a transition that often informed the contemplative nature of his later output.

The visual arrangement employs a characteristic Rinpa approach, utilising negative space to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, their garments providing blocks of colour against the muted, golden-toned silk background. The scene depicts a group of figures engaged in a ritualised activity, with one individual holding a torch, suggesting a nocturnal or twilight setting. The architectural elements are suggested through minimal, clean lines, allowing the focus to remain on the human subjects and their interaction with the environment.

Sakai Hōitsu is recognised for his revival of the Rinpa style, particularly his study of Ogata Kōrin. His work often bridges the gap between decorative art and narrative genre painting. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance formal composition with a sense of quiet observation. The use of colour is restrained, relying on the contrast between the dark robes of the figures and the warm, neutral ground of the silk.
