This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Matsumoto Kōshirō IV in the role of the fishmonger Gorōbei. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who created a series of actor portraits for the Kiri-za theatre in Edo. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised representations common in the Ukiyo-e genre of the time.
