Description

A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō, depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Denkūrō 2nd in a dramatic performance pose.

This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Denkūrō 2nd in the role of a yako, or footman. Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and became known for his focus on the realistic portrayal of actors, a departure from the more stylised depictions common in earlier ukiyo-e. The print captures the actor in a dynamic pose, characteristic of the mie, a climactic moment in a kabuki performance where the actor freezes to express intense emotion.

The composition is typical of the hosoban format, which was the standard size for actor prints during this period. The figure occupies the majority of the frame, with the actor's posture conveying a sense of physical tension. His costume is rendered with attention to the patterns and folds of the fabric, while the background remains minimal to keep the focus on the performer. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that have aged with the paper, providing a sense of the print's historical provenance.

Shunkō’s approach to portraiture involved a keen observation of facial features, allowing him to capture the specific likeness of the actor rather than a generic mask. This print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting both the costume design and the performance style of the era. The lines are precise, reflecting the skill of the carver who translated the artist's original drawing into the woodblock. As a piece of yakusha-e, or actor print, this work provides a window into the popular entertainment of the time, where the fame of kabuki performers was disseminated through such affordable and widely circulated prints.
