Description

A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Sakakiyama Sangoro II in a character role with the artist's signature expressive style.

This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sakakiyama Sangoro II in the role of Princess Otae, the daughter of Michinaga. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 prints within a ten-month span. Sharaku is recognised for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e tradition of the late eighteenth century. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and expressions of his subjects, providing a psychological depth that was unusual for the period.

The composition features the actor in a standing pose, draped in a kimono decorated with a repeating fan motif. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the fabric and the actor's posture. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted reds, and black ink to create a balanced visual effect. The background is kept minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the theatrical persona of the actor. The print captures a specific moment of performance, reflecting the transient nature of the kabuki theatre culture in Edo-period Japan.

Sharaku's approach to portraiture often provoked mixed reactions among his contemporaries, as his unflinching observation of the actors' features contrasted with the more flattering depictions produced by other artists of the time. This print serves as a clear example of his technical skill and his commitment to capturing the essence of the performer. The work is printed on paper using traditional woodblock techniques, ensuring that the fine lines and subtle colour transitions are preserved. It remains a significant example of the actor print genre, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values and theatrical traditions of the late Edo period.
