This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Tanimura Torazō in the role of Washizuka Happeiji. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which the artist was active in the Edo print market. Sharaku is known for his unconventional approach to the yakusha-e (actor print) genre, often choosing to exaggerate facial features rather than idealise the subject.

The composition focuses on the upper torso and head of the actor, set against a mica-dusted grey background. This technique, known as kira-e, provides a metallic sheen that separates the figure from the flat plane. The actor's expression is one of intense concentration, with eyes widened and mouth set in a firm line. Sharaku uses bold, sweeping lines to define the contours of the kimono and the actor's posture, while the facial features are rendered with a stark, almost caricatured precision. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on ochre, black, and white to maintain focus on the psychological state of the character.

Sharaku's work differs from his contemporaries who typically portrayed actors with smooth, youthful features. Instead, he captures the specific physical traits of the performer, including the texture of the skin and the tension in the neck muscles. This print is part of a series documenting performances at the Kawarazaki-za theatre. The inclusion of the actor's crest on the kimono provides a specific identification for the viewer, linking the print to the theatrical culture of the Edo period.
