This engraving by Johann Sadeler I, after a design by Michiel Coxcie, depicts the immediate aftermath of the first murder in biblical tradition. The composition centres on the prone figure of Abel, whose body lies before an altar where smoke rises from a sacrificial fire. To the left, Adam sits in a posture of contemplation, while Eve kneels to the right, her hands raised to her head in a gesture of grief. The figures exhibit the muscular, elongated proportions characteristic of the Mannerist style, reflecting the influence of Italian art on Northern European printmakers of the late sixteenth century.

The print is part of a series illustrating the early chapters of Genesis. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a moralising context for the scene, referencing the fratricide described in the fourth chapter of the book. The hand-applied colour adds a layer of definition to the figures and the surrounding environment, distinguishing the pale flesh tones from the earthy greens and browns of the setting. The background features a distant, rolling terrain that provides a sense of scale, contrasting with the immediate, heavy emotional weight of the foreground figures.
