Suzanne Valadon, a former artist model who transitioned to painting, produced this work in 1909. It depicts the biblical figures of Adam and Eve in a manner that departs from traditional religious iconography. Her approach to the human form is direct and unvarnished, reflecting her experience observing the body from both sides of the easel.
