Description
A formal portrait of Dutch naval officer Jacob Binkes by Nicolaes Maes, featuring the subject in polished armour with a flintlock pistol.
This portrait by Nicolaes Maes depicts the Dutch naval officer Jacob Binkes. Maes, a pupil of Rembrandt, transitioned from genre scenes to the more lucrative field of portraiture during the latter part of his career. This work reflects the shift in Dutch taste towards the elegant, French-influenced style that became popular in the late seventeenth century.
Binkes is shown in half-length, wearing polished steel armour that catches the light. His hand rests upon a flintlock pistol, a detail that identifies his profession and status. The dark, moody background includes a faint suggestion of a maritime scene, linking the sitter to his naval service. The composition relies on the contrast between the metallic sheen of the armour and the soft, voluminous curls of his wig. The gold chain draped across his chest provides a focal point of colour against the sombre tones of the clothing.
Maes demonstrates his technical skill in the rendering of textures, particularly the reflection on the metal and the fine detail of the lace collar. The lighting is controlled, focusing the viewer's attention on the face of the Admiral, which is painted with a degree of psychological observation characteristic of Maes's training. The portrait captures the gravity expected of a high-ranking military figure of the period. It remains a representative example of the formal portraiture commissioned by the Dutch elite during the late 1670s, shortly before the subject's death in the Battle of Tobago.
