Francisco de Zurbarán, a master of the Spanish Golden Age, painted this work during the 1630s. The subject is a lamb, its legs bound, resting upon a stone ledge against a dark, featureless background. This composition is a classic example of the artist's ability to render texture and light with extreme precision. The soft, curly wool of the animal contrasts sharply with the smooth, cold surface of the stone and the deep shadows surrounding the figure.

The title, Agnus Dei, refers to the Latin phrase for Lamb of God, a traditional Christian symbol representing the sacrifice of Christ. Zurbarán was known for his monastic subjects and his capacity to imbue simple objects with a sense of quiet, meditative gravity. He avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the physical presence of the lamb. The lighting is directional, catching the contours of the animal's fleece and the curve of its horns, while leaving the rest of the scene in near-total darkness. This technique, often associated with tenebrism, directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subject.

Zurbarán produced several versions of this theme, indicating its popularity among his contemporaries. The work is devoid of narrative action, existing as a static, devotional image. The restraint in the composition allows the viewer to focus on the tactile qualities of the painting, from the coarse texture of the rope binding the lamb's feet to the delicate shading on its muzzle. It is a work of technical discipline, reflecting the artist's training in Seville and his alignment with the Counter-Reformation aesthetic, which favoured clarity and emotional directness in religious art. The painting remains a primary example of how Zurbarán transformed everyday objects into subjects of spiritual contemplation through his mastery of light and form.
