Description
A seminal 1947 work by Arshile Gorky, featuring biomorphic forms and calligraphic lines set against a warm, earthy background.
Painted in 1947, Agony represents a mature phase in the career of Arshile Gorky. The work displays his transition from the influence of European Surrealism toward the gestural abstraction that defined the New York School. Gorky utilised a warm, earthy palette dominated by ochre and burnt sienna, which provides a grounding for the floating, biomorphic shapes scattered across the canvas.
The composition is characterised by thin, calligraphic lines that define ambiguous forms. These shapes suggest organic structures, perhaps botanical or anatomical, yet they remain elusive. The central figure, rendered in lighter tones of white and pale yellow, contrasts with the darker, more saturated red and black elements positioned to the right. Gorky applied the paint with varying degrees of opacity, allowing the underlying layers to contribute to the overall texture of the surface.
This piece reflects the artist's personal history and his internal state during the final years of his life. The title suggests a sense of turmoil, yet the execution remains controlled and deliberate. Unlike the chaotic application of paint seen in later action painting, Gorky maintained a focus on line and spatial arrangement. The interaction between the flat, brown background and the suspended, fluid shapes creates a tension that draws the viewer into the work. It is a study in balance, where the weight of the darker forms is offset by the lighter, more delicate structures. The painting is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it is recognised for its contribution to the development of mid-century American modernism.
