Arman Manookian, an American artist of Armenian descent, produced this work during his brief but active period in Hawaii. The painting depicts the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu, rendered through a modernist lens that prioritises simplified forms and bold, non-naturalistic colour choices. The composition is structured around the horizontal reflection of the structures in the water, contrasted against the verticality of the stylised trees.

Manookian employs a flattened perspective, typical of the modernist movements of the early twentieth century. The sky is a striking, saturated red, which pushes the dark, silhouetted foliage into the foreground. The architecture of the canal-side buildings is reduced to geometric planes of yellow and ochre, creating a rhythmic pattern that echoes across the water surface. His technique involves clear, dark outlines that define each shape, separating the colour fields with precision. This approach removes unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the essential geometry of the scene.

Born in Constantinople, Manookian moved to the United States before settling in Hawaii in 1926. His work is often associated with the regional modernism that emerged in the Pacific during the 1920s. He frequently utilised a palette that departed from traditional representational colours, opting for high-contrast combinations that evoke the intensity of the tropical environment. The painting reflects a period of artistic experimentation where the artist sought to capture the essence of the Hawaiian environment through a synthesis of decorative design and observational study. The work remains a clear example of his ability to balance structural rigour with a bold, expressive use of colour, providing a distinct interpretation of the Honolulu urban environment during the late 1920s.
