Lepautre, a prolific French draughtsman and engraver, specialised in architectural designs and ornamental compositions. His work often provided templates for interior decorators and craftsmen during the reign of Louis XIV.

The composition centres on an alcove, a common feature in seventeenth-century French interior design. Within this space, Semele reclines upon a bed, surrounded by drapery and putti. To the left, Jupiter appears amidst clouds, wielding his thunderbolt. The scene captures the dramatic moment of his arrival, which ultimately leads to Semele's destruction.
