Alessandro Allori, a student and protégé of Agnolo Bronzino, produced this work during the height of the Florentine Mannerist period. The painting depicts a young man adopting the mythological persona of Mercury, the messenger god, in the act of slaying the giant Argus. The composition reflects the stylistic tendencies of the era, characterised by elongated figures, a cool, porcelain-like treatment of skin, and a deliberate, artificial grace.

The central figure of Mercury stands in a contrapposto pose, his form partially obscured by stylised, cloud-like drapery. His expression remains detached and calm, contrasting with the violent nature of the mythological narrative. Beneath him, the recumbent figure of Argus lies in a state of defeat, while a cow, representing the transformed Io, rests in the background.
