This triptych, painted by Hans Baldung Grien in 1516, represents a significant example of Northern Renaissance religious art. The central panel depicts the Baptism of Christ, a subject common in the period, yet rendered here with Baldung's characteristic attention to anatomical detail and dramatic lighting. Christ stands in the water, his posture submissive, while John the Baptist performs the rite. Above, the Holy Spirit descends amidst dark, swirling clouds, with the figure of God the Father appearing in the upper reaches of the composition. Two angels flank the central figures, their garments rendered in heavy, sculptural folds that suggest the weight and texture of the fabric.

The side panels feature standing figures of saints, each positioned on a stone plinth. These figures are depicted with a sense of gravity and presence, their vestments detailed with precision. At the base of these side panels, smaller kneeling figures represent the donors of the altarpiece, a common practice in devotional art of the sixteenth century. The heraldic shields included near these donors provide clues to the patronage of the work, linking the religious subject matter to the specific families who commissioned the piece for their local church.

Baldung, a student of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the medium through the careful application of oil paint, creating smooth transitions in skin tones and a sense of depth in the background. The colour palette relies on a contrast between the cool blues of the sky and water, and the warmer tones of the robes and flesh. The composition is balanced, with the central scene drawing the eye through the interaction of the figures, while the side panels provide a stable, vertical frame. This work remains a clear example of the technical skill and theological focus present in German art during the early sixteenth century.
