Description

A sixteenth-century woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting the biblical story of Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, featuring a split-register composition.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the biblical narrative of Joseph interpreting the dreams of Pharaoh. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common device in sixteenth-century printmaking to convey sequential storytelling within a single frame. The upper register shows the Pharaoh reclining in a bed, attended by Joseph, who gestures as he explains the meaning of the monarch's visions. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and a tiled floor, reflects the Northern Renaissance interest in integrating biblical subjects into contemporary visual frameworks.

The lower register illustrates the content of the dream itself: the seven lean cows consuming the seven fat cows, alongside the stalks of grain. Cranach employs a clear, linear style, using hatching to define form and shadow. The figures are rendered with the characteristic proportions and facial types associated with the Cranach workshop. The use of hand-applied colour, typical of prints from this period, adds a layer of visual interest to the stark black lines of the woodblock.

Cranach was a central figure in the German Reformation, and his workshop produced numerous prints that disseminated religious and moral narratives to a broad audience. This work demonstrates the technical precision of his woodcut production, where the economy of line is used to communicate complex theological and narrative information. The print serves as a record of how Renaissance artists visualised ancient texts, often dressing the figures in the attire of their own time to make the stories more accessible to the viewer. The balance between the domestic interior above and the symbolic, dreamlike imagery below creates a compelling visual contrast, typical of the period's approach to narrative illustration.
