A detailed late-Gothic panel depicting four scenes from the Passion of Christ, featuring gold leaf backgrounds and expressive figures.
This panel, attributed to the Master of the Schlägl Altarpiece, presents four distinct scenes from the Passion of Christ. The work follows the conventions of late fifteenth-century Austrian painting, utilising gold leaf backgrounds to denote a sacred space removed from the temporal world. The narrative begins in the upper left with the Agony in the Garden, where Christ kneels in prayer behind a wattle fence, while his disciples sleep nearby. In the upper right, the Mocking of Christ is depicted, showing a blindfolded Christ seated upon a stone plinth, surrounded by figures in contemporary late-medieval attire.
The lower left panel illustrates the Arrest of Christ, where he is led away by a crowd of soldiers and officials. The final scene in the lower right depicts the Flagellation, with Christ bound to a central column while tormentors strike him. The artist employs a clear, didactic style, focusing on the emotional weight of the narrative through the varied expressions and gestures of the figures. The use of colour is deliberate, with deep reds, greens, and muted earth tones contrasting against the gilded surfaces. The figures are rendered with a focus on the specific textures of their garments, reflecting the fashion of the period. This work provides a window into the devotional practices of the late medieval era, where such altarpieces served as visual aids for prayer and contemplation. The composition is structured by the physical divisions of the panel, creating a rhythmic sequence that guides the viewer through the events of the Passion. The attention to detail in the armour, headwear, and facial features demonstrates the technical skill characteristic of the Schlägl workshop.
