This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a central moment from Japanese mythology: the emergence of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, from the Heavenly Rock Cave. According to the Kojiki, Amaterasu retreated into a cave after a dispute with her brother, Susanoo, plunging the world into darkness. The other deities gathered outside to lure her out, eventually succeeding through a combination of music, dance, and the reflection of her own light in a mirror.

Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, captures the tension of the scene through sharp contrasts. The composition is dominated by the deep, oppressive black of the cave entrance, which frames the luminous, warm interior where the goddess resides. Amaterasu is shown with long, flowing hair and traditional robes, her presence providing a sense of calm against the dynamic, almost frantic energy of the deities attempting to coax her forth.
