The woman wears a voluminous gown with a wide skirt, typical of mid-nineteenth-century Western fashion, and carries a parasol. The man is dressed in a dark frock coat, light trousers, and a hat, sporting a beard that was often a point of fascination for Japanese observers at the time.

Utagawa Yoshikazu, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was a prolific producer of these images. His work captures the specific cultural encounter between Japan and the West during the Bakumatsu era.
