Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving of the Angel of the Annunciation demonstrates his technical precision. The figure is depicted in a graceful, standing posture, holding a staff topped with a fleur-de-lis. A long, curling scroll winds around the staff, a common motif in fifteenth-century religious art to represent the spoken word of the divine message.
