Description
A detailed engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicting the biblical Annunciation to the Shepherds, influenced by the style of Jacopo Bassano.
Aegidius Sadeler II, a member of the prominent Flemish family of engravers, produced this work during his time in Prague. The composition draws inspiration from the Venetian painter Jacopo Bassano, whose influence is visible in the treatment of the figures and the integration of animals into the biblical narrative. The scene depicts the moment shepherds are visited by an angel, an event described in the Gospel of Luke.
The engraving displays the technical precision characteristic of Sadeler's output. He employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the livestock, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The angel appears in the upper portion, surrounded by clouds and light, while the shepherds below react with a mix of surprise and contemplation. One shepherd plays a pipe, adding a pastoral element to the scene, while others look upward toward the celestial messenger.
The inclusion of Latin text at the top and bottom of the print provides context for the event. The upper inscription, 'QVIA NATVS EST VOBIS HODIE SALVATOR', directly references the biblical account. The lower text offers a poetic interpretation of the scene, typical of the period's humanistic approach to religious art. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the painterly qualities of the original design into the medium of copperplate engraving. The balance between the human figures and the animals creates a sense of grounded reality, contrasting with the supernatural appearance of the angel. This print serves as an example of the international exchange of artistic styles between Italy and the North during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
