Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his final years in Rome, was instrumental in translating the works of Italian masters into print. This specific composition is based on a design by Federico Zuccari, reflecting the stylistic tendencies of the late Renaissance and Mannerist period.

The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The lower section features the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, flanked by Old Testament prophets who hold tablets inscribed with Latin text. These figures provide a narrative bridge between the prophecies of the past and the event of the Incarnation. The architectural elements, including columns and distant landscapes, frame the central interaction, grounding the scene in a classical setting.

The upper register shifts to a celestial realm, dominated by God the Father surrounded by a host of angels and cherubim. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, descends towards the Virgin, linking the divine and earthly spheres through a beam of light. The use of line in this engraving is precise and controlled, characteristic of Cort's technical ability to render texture, volume, and atmospheric depth through hatching and cross-hatching.
