Otto H. Bacher, an American artist known for his technical proficiency in printmaking, created this etching during his period of activity in Europe. The work depicts the mythological figure Arachne, the mortal weaver who challenged Athena to a contest and was subsequently transformed into a spider. Bacher employs a vertical composition where the figure of the woman merges with the geometry of the web. Her hair flows upward to form the structural lines of the silk, while her lower body is draped in a dark, triangular mass that suggests the tapering form of a spider.

The etching demonstrates Bacher's command of line and shadow.
